30 Day Movie Meme: Day 03.

Day 01 - The best movie you saw during the last year
Day 02 - The most underrated movie

Yesterday when discussing Lars and the Real Girl in my meme post, I mentioned that I don't like mushy/cutesy/chick flick/girlie-girl/rom-com movies.

This one is an exception.

My favorite movie love story is Penelope and Max/Johnny in the film Penelope. Critics haaaated this movie, but whatevs, they're just bitter, failed screenwriters lolol. j/k kind of

Anyhoo, long story short & no spoilers: Penelope is a blueblood whose family was cursed generations ago by a witch. She is born with a pig nose that can only be 'removed' when she is "accepted by one of her own". Her parents take this to mean that she has to marry a blueblood. They fake their daughter's death when she's very young & hide her away in their mansion. When she comes of age, they begin trying to find a husband for her, but all the bluebloods run away screaming when they see her pig nose. (Whatever, I think she's ADORABLE.) Enter down-and-out blueblood Max. He's a gambling addict & has spent his fortune, so he agrees to meet Penelope and get photos of her for a tabloid reporter. Except he becomes enamoured of her & goes back day after day and never gets the photo he's been paid for. When Penelope finally reveals herself, he's shocked at first, but so in love that he doesn't care. But when Penelope asks him to marry her, he balks and she thinks it's because of her looks but OMG IT SO ISN'T. THEN STUFF HAPPENS THAT EXPLAINS WHY JOHNNY I MEAN MAX WON'T MARRY HER. Let's just say this is a fairy tale & fairy tales have happy endings 99.9% of the time, y/y? ;P

(Oh, and my mother cannot watch this movie without making Tyler Kennedy jokes. Shocking, I know.)

We clearly have similar taste in movies because I LOVE Penelope.

LOL we must! I watched it again just a couple weeks ago & was thinking to myself "Critics hated this? It bombed @ the box office? REALLY?!?!? REALLY?!?!?" the whole time :P

I know! Its a fairy tale- you can't take it too seriously. I thought it was cute and, because I'm e'er the art dork, it has great visuals.

But I'll admit I didn't see it in theaters (because I never do)- I bought it on a whim at Borders.

I want her wardrobe. Seriously.

I never saw it when it was in theaters, either. My mom is a huge Reese Witherspoon fangirl & has all her movies on DVD. I bought her this one the Christmas after it came out & now I want to steal it from her lol.

Downloading this movie right now, I'm going to have to watch it sometime soon!
Jun. 3rd, 2010 05:48 pm (UTC)
Oooh, I hope you like it!
Jun. 3rd, 2010 05:55 pm (UTC)
It sounds really cute, I'm sure I will :)

This was a really cute movie! I don't understand why it got bad reviews. It had a nice message to it also =]

I don't understand it, either. I mean, if *I* liked it & I'm so against ~romantical~ stuff (or at I least pretend to be lol) then it can't be too bad! But then critics are hard to figure out sometimes lol ;P

This is a fun meme!

I loved Lars and the Real girl! Definitely underrated. And Penelope was pretty cute too! I liked Reese Witherspoon's character.

It is fun. So far...some of the upcoming days have me stumped. I have a 30 day music meme I may do if I make it all the way thru this one!

I think I'm gonna have to go buy Lars on DVD. Reese's character was so different than what you expect from her. I loved her no-nonsense attitude (& funky hair).

i don't watch a lot of movies...
Jun. 7th, 2010 02:48 am (UTC)
Oh, definitely see this one. It has Mr Tumnus in it!!! And Wednesday Adams! And Elle Woods! WIN!

(I don't either, really. My mother is ~VERY~ picky about language & sex & stuff in movies, so I either have to watch while she's away or on my computer. ISTG I was trying to watch Superhero Movie last weekend [because I flove Drake Bell, but that's a whole other story lololol] and she FLIPPED HER SHIT because of "all the swearing"...which amounted to 1 "shit" in 5 minutes. ISTG.)

And the fact that I know ALL of those people (well, duh on Witherspoon, I wub her) makes me go :D because i know people who would just be lost on what you did there.

(I'm not picky!!! As long as it's not too gory and bloody or anything like the Human centiped, I'm down. and no rape scenes. i can't stomach those. even if it is ~acting~. I refuse to watch movies on my computer. it's not the same. at all. But whoa. That's sorry, i sawwy. So that means... like PG movies? o.O)
Jun. 11th, 2010 11:39 am (UTC)
I always get hung up on characters the actors have played before, so when I describe a movie, I'll use their character names from previous movies. Same for TV shows. I need a life, I know lol.

(Yeah, I'm not picky either except for the same things you don't like. So, yeah, PG & G rated movies; a lot of PG-13 ones are too ~racy~ for her lololol. OH, MOTHER.)
Jun. 17th, 2010 07:38 am (UTC)
I do that tooooo! Especially when i can't remember their name, I just relate them to the character i knew them as.

(PG-13 doesn't even mean anything anymore. I don't even understand why they still use that rating.)
