30 Day Movie Meme: Day 02.

Day 01 - The best movie you saw during the last year

This one was difficult to answer. I finally settled on Lars & the Real Girl. Critics loved this movie, but I don't know anyone IRL that's seen it. When I suggested watching it with my mom & brother one evening, their response was "Ewwww, no!" but it's not squicky in any way.

In case you haven't heard of this movie, it stars Ryan Gosling as a socially-inept guy who orders an anatomically correct sex doll for a girlfriend. He passes her off as a real girl named Bianca that he met on the internet. The townspeople love Lars, so they begin to treat the doll as a real person. I won't spoil the ending for you BECAUSE YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE. It's sweet & funny and doesn't stoop to being tacky or gross. (In fact, being a true gentleman, Lars has Bianca sleep in the guest bedroom of his brother's house while he continues to sleep in his garage apartment.)

Ah! That is such a cute movie.
You're right. I don't think I've met anyone else who has seen it.

I was bored one Saturday & this movie was on about 6 different channels, so I decided to see what it was. I knew the basic premise but thought it would be squicky...but I was instantly charmed. Even the Ryan Gosling fangirl I know refuses to watch it!

Ha... its was on sale at Target so I bought it.
Like you told the others, it's hard to explain. Its not just a dude with a sex doll because he never uses her like that. Its more about the town embracing a guy they love despite his quirks so he can figure himself out.
Which sounds kinda lame, but it works.

EXACTLY! Beautifully put :D I was thisclose to just copying & pasting the Wikipedia description lol.

I'm just not into cutesy girlie love stories :\ I like blood and explosions and car chases. :)

I still might see it though if you say its really that good. Netflix FTW.

It's really not girlie at all. I don't like overly girly romantic movies, either. It's nothing like a rom-com or a chick flick or anything like that. It's...sort of hard to explain lol. It's more about a person ~finding~ themself, but not all angsty & self-important ;P

*adds to Netflix*

I'm usually a horror/psychological thriller type of girl, but I'll add this to my list.

LOVE that Andy Gibb song, btw

I'm such a wuss, I can't watch horror movies (except for old ones with no blood lol). I bought The Hills Have Eyes when it came out on DVD (because I liked the actor in it) and it took me 3 weeks to watch O_o. Lars is really unconventional, not like most of the ~romantic~ movies Hollywood turns out.

I could listen to that song all day long.....

Oh I'll give any horror movie a chance. The Hills Have Eyes IS kind of gross, the second one is slightly less gross.

I like those old horror movies from the 60's and 70's that they package together and sell during halloween.

I was ready to give up eating after watching that movie lmao.

I will watch horror movies from the 1920s-1950s; y'know, the kind with no gore ;) (Which is strange cause I'm not squeamish about blood or anything, I'll watch operations on the Health Network & stuff...) I am a bit curious about the Wolfman remake that was out earlier this year. Have you seen it?
Jun. 4th, 2010 03:40 am (UTC)
You'd probably never go into the woods after seeing 'Wrong Turn' and 'Wrong Turn 2' then.

One I've found that is really good is called 'Don't go into the basement!'
Its about a mental asylum and its black and white.
Wolfman does look interesting.

There's really a horror movied called "Don't go into the basement!"? That's so awesome. I'll have to check it out.

Thats the link I found to it on IMDB. Its called 'The Forgotten' on there, but on my copy of it, it is called 'Don't go into the basement'. It starts out REALLY cheesy, but gets really good.
